From Seats to Purpose: The Story Behind Wearsos + Southwest Airlines®

When people find out our bags are made from upcycled old airplane seats, their faces always light up. There’s something unexpected about it. However, Wearsos is much more than the alternative materials we use in our products—it’s about the people behind them. In this blog, we want to highlight one special person who has helped turn our ideas into something real and impactful.

That person is Ana Schwager, Senior Corporate Responsibility Program Manager at Southwest Airlines®—and the heart behind their Repurpose with Purpose initiative. Ana has been a true guiding light, helping shape Wearsos into what it is today: bold, community-rooted and full of purpose.

Back in 2019, we were just two young dreamers with a vision: turn retired airline seat leather into something that matters. We weren’t only thinking about sustainability—we were thinking about our community. Specifically, the incredible women in rural Costa Rica who were ready to grow, lead and thrive.

When we shared this dream, Ana was one of the first to say: “Yes. Let’s do this.”

Since then, with the support of Repurpose with Purpose, thousands of pounds of airline leather have landed in our workshop—and into the hands of skilled women who are crafting more than just bags. They're building futures.

Some of our artisans have taken their first flights ever. Others have stepped into leadership roles. Many are now the main providers in their households. This is what real, grounded impact looks like.
